about

'This Is Now' almost bookends my 26 years writing songs, originating as it does from a bad year in 1994 - on the dole, miserable and broke - then, to push me over the edge, I glimpsed a girl that had broken my heart six months earlier. And so a song was born.
We used to play This Is Now as a show stopper with The High Ones back in the late Brit-pop years, building up a mighty head of musical steam, ably topped by Franks Walden's sax riffage jazzing up the brew, I miss that.
So this song has always been with me, meaning many things over the years, always ringing true "trying to find what's going on tomorrow, discover what the next day will become"

lyrics

Lately it's been easy to remember
Those things you find it harder to forget
I'm sure these days are bound to come much brighter
But nothing much is happening just yet

Then you saw someone you thought was gone, got you thinking 'how?'
Ah but all that was then and this is now

Today you talked to no one very special
And watched a world you couldn't really see
Spent time on things you never can remember
You don't know what you want or wanna be

Then you saw someone you thought was gone, got you thinking 'how?'
Ah but all that was then and this is now

You're trying to find what's going on tomorrow
Discover what the next day will become
You're looking back too often to get moving
Standing still while others seem to run
